Lime Plaster Walls in Period Properties
Lime plaster is the wall surface of Canterbury’s Georgian, Victorian, and earlier properties. Breathable emulsions and breathable primers are used throughout. Standard vinyl emulsions form a vapour barrier — moisture is trapped, paint fails, plaster cracks. Roper Road, Orchard Street, and Cambridge Road are typical of the lime plaster work covered.
Modern Plasterboard and Skimmed Walls
Post-war and newer properties in Blean, Rough Common, Tyler Hill, and Harbledown have modern plasterboard or skimmed plasterboard. New plasterboard needs a sealing coat. Freshly skimmed plaster needs to cure first. See our plasterboard painting page for new plaster and board.
Crack Repair and Wall Preparation
Cracks are normal in Canterbury’s period stock. Filler is matched to the surface: flexible on lime, ready-mixed on modern plaster, lime-compatible on listed building fabric. Sanded smooth before priming. Never skipped.
Feature Walls and Accent Colours
Feature walls are part of the room repaint, not an add-on. Your decorator masks cleanly at the boundary and brushes the cut-in for a sharp line. See our feature wall painting page for accent wall options.
Heritage Colour Advice
Colour advice is included in the site visit for period and conservation area homes. Farrow & Ball and Little Greene palettes come up regularly. Lime plaster absorbs light differently from plasterboard — colours can read softer or warmer.

Here’s How It Works
1. Surface Assessment
Your decorator inspects each wall to identify the plaster type, any cracking or damp, and any previous products that may affect adhesion.
2. Crack Filling and Preparation
All cracks are filled with the correct filler for the surface type. Filling is sanded smooth before priming.
3. Priming
Lime plaster receives a breathable primer. New plaster receives a sealing coat. Modern plasterboard receives the appropriate primer for the surface condition.
4. Topcoat Application
The chosen colour is applied in two full coats for even coverage. Walls are inspected between coats.
5. Feature Wall
Where a contrasting feature wall is included, it is masked, painted in the correct sequence, and inspected before the adjacent wall colour is completed.
6. Final Inspection
Your decorator inspects the finished walls in good light and deals with any missed areas before leaving.
