Staining is the most common approach for garden boundaries. A semi-transparent stain penetrates the timber rather than sitting on top — it feeds the wood, resists moisture, and allows the timber to breathe. It outlasts opaque paint on sound timber, which can peel when the wood moves or absorbs ground moisture.

New timber needs two coats. Weathered timber that has dried and greyed needs cleaning and sometimes a pre-treatment coat before stain.

Some fences — particularly close-board panels already painted — suit an opaque finish. Exterior-grade fence paints with good flexibility and UV resistance hold colour longer and provide a harder moisture barrier than stains, but need sound surface preparation.

Where existing paint is flaking, failing layers are removed before a new coat. Painting over peeling paint extends the problem rather than solving it.

Coastal properties need marine-grade or high-flexibility finishes on all exposed timber. Your decorator specifies the right product for each property’s exposure level — how close to the shore, how sheltered the garden.
