UPVC Conservatory Frameworks

The 1990s and early 2000s housing across Sturry, Harbledown, and the residential streets north of the city has a high density of white UPVC conservatories — most now showing their age.

White UPVC from the 1990s and 2000s yellows, stains, or just looks dated against refreshed brickwork. Replacement: £5,000–£20,000. Respray: £450–£750. With the right primer, the finish holds ten years plus.

Profiles are cleaned, degreased, and lightly abraded for a key. A UPVC adhesion primer goes on, then two spray coats of exterior finish. Masking is substantial — roof glass, side glazing, and surrounding brickwork all covered carefully; overspray on glass is hard to remove.

Popular Kent colours: anthracite grey (RAL 7016), slate grey, satin black. Any of these transforms a 1990s white conservatory.

Aluminium Conservatory Frames

Conservatories from the 1970s and 1980s are often aluminium, not UPVC. Aluminium takes paint differently — etch primer or specialist metal primer rather than UPVC adhesion primer. Frame material is identified before quoting.

Timber Conservatory Frames

Some Victorian and Edwardian properties — in St Dunstans and the villages around Bridge and Chartham — have period lean-tos with timber frameworks. Timber needs exterior wood prep, a flexible exterior primer, and a brushed gloss or satin — not spray.

Timber frames also need assessment for rot at the sill and bottom rail before painting. Your decorator advises on any joinery repairs needed first.

Dwarf Walls and Surrounding Brickwork

Many conservatories sit on a half-height brick or render dwarf wall. Painting it to complement the new frame colour completes the look — a weathered brick dwarf wall beneath a fresh respray undermines the result. Typically masonry paint, quoted as part of the respray where relevant.

Colour Options

White to grey is the most common change, but not the only one. Sage green, navy, black, and heritage blues and greens all work. Your decorator advises on colours that complement the main house and existing window frames at the quote visit.

Our Conservatory Painting Process

1. Assessment

Your decorator checks the frame material, condition, existing paint or surface treatment, and glazing configuration before quoting.

2. Cleaning

All UPVC or aluminium profiles are cleaned with a degreaser solution. Timber frames are sanded and any rot is assessed.

3. Masking

All glazing panels, roof glass, and surrounding surfaces are masked. This is the most time-consuming preparation step and is done carefully.

4. Primer

UPVC adhesion primer, metal etch primer, or exterior wood primer applied as appropriate to the frame material.

5. Spray application

Two coats of exterior finish applied by spray for UPVC and aluminium frames, allowing full dry time between coats. Timber frames may be brush or roller finished.

6. Inspection and de-mask

Masking is removed carefully, all surfaces are inspected, and any edge touching-up is completed.
